Classical review: Berlin Philharmonic/Rattle

If the first of the Berlin Philharmonic's two Proms this week was a typical Simon Rattle programme of Wagner and Messiaen, then the second could take been devised by one of his great predecessors. Both Brahms's Third Symphony and Shostakovich's 10th were major works in Herbert von Karajan's repertory, and while it was not so surprising to determine Rattle pairing them, what was quite startling, in particular in the Brahms, was just how Karajan-like his performance was.

With such a glorious orchestra to conduct, the temptation just to enjoy the sound it makes must be hard to resist - and the Berlin players were on top form here, with the principal sum oboe, trumpet and bassoon particularly great - merely Rattle's laid-back journey through the Brahms, sometimes hardly conducting at all, was still a surprise from someone world Health Organization has reinforced much of his reputation on the energy and momentum he injects into his conducting. At multiplication it seemed like a mutual wonder society, with Rattle luxuriating in the sounds laid out before him, and the players relishing the trust he invests in them. As dramatic architecture, though, the Brahms came up well short, even in its finale.

The Shostakovich began in a similarly restrained manner, still it quickly became clear that Rattle's structural suitcase here was going to be much tighter. The path he steered through the immense first movement towards its terrifying Mahlerian climax was unswerving. Even after that, he kept a bit in second-stringer in the brief and brutal scherzo, and presented the dull movement in a way that gave centre stage to a ravishing series of wind solos, ahead winding up the tension in the finale, piece still holding everything controlled.

The celebrated horn-driven funk getup Tower of Power has been issuing albums and touring the creation steadily since the early '70s, in addition to patronage up multitudinous other musicians. The group's loss leader since the beginning has always been tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, wHO was born in Detroit, only opted to pursue his musical dreams in Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland that Castillo put together a chemical group called the Motowns, which as its key suggested, specialized in '60s-era soul. Castillo teamed up with a barytone sax player (and Motowns fan) Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and ahead long the Motowns had transformed into Tower of Power (one of the first tunes the couple penned together was "You're Still a Young Man," which would eventually go on to be one of the TOP's signature tune compositions). Tower of Power played on a regular basis in the Bay Area end-to-end the late '60s, as its lineup ofttimes vainglorious up to x members, including such other mainstays as Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals and Rocco Prestia on sea bass. By 1970, the funk getup had inked a recording contract with Bill Graham's San Francisco Records, resulting in the group's debut the same year, East Bay Grease, which failed to make an effect on the charts as TOP was still trying to regain their own sound.

Merely it all came in concert cursorily for the chemical group, as 1972's Bump City would touch off a string of authoritative pip releases, including 1973's self-titled release (which included another one of the group's most enduring tunes, "What Is Hip?"), 1974's Back to Oakland, plus 1975's Urban Renewal and In the Slot. While Tower of Power remained a must-see live act, the quality of their subsequent records became erratic, resulting in some admirable releases (Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now, Live and in Living Color) and various uninspired albums that ar best skipped all over (We Came to Play, Back on the Streets).

Despite the dip in the quality of their albums, Tower of Power remained a a good deal desired support group for some of pop/rock's biggest names, including Elton John, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, Little Feat, David Sanborn, Michelle Shocked, Paula Abdul, Aaron Neville, Aerosmith, Michael Bolton, Billy Preston, PiL, Rod Stewart, Toto, Merl Saunders, and others. Tower of Power remains very active to this day, holding up a snappy touring schedule and issuance such novel albums as 1999's Soul Vaccination: Live; while respective compilations were issued around the like time: Rhino's double magnetic disc What Is Hip?: The Tower of Power Anthology (1999) and Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years (2001), plus Epic/Legacy's Soul With a Capital "S": The Best of Tower of Power (2001).

Linkin Park Singer Denies He Plans To Join Velvet Revolver

Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, has denied that he is set to replace Scott Weliand in Velvet Revolver.

Weiland acrimoniously split from the band in April at the conclusion of their European tour.

Since then, there has been much speculation about who would replace the singer, with reports claiming that the band would audition for a new frontman using a Reality TV show.

Speaking to Kerrang, Bennington said that any reports linking him to the position were the result of a misunderstanding.

"I'm friends with all the guys in Velvet Revolver and have played with all of them before. I'm friends with Scott too,” he said.

"I think the rumour that I was going to join Velvet Revolver started because (guitarist) Slash asked me if I'd come play a show with them in Vegas right around the time that Scott left the band.

"Timing-wise, it didn't work out for me, though. Maybe people assumed that invitation meant I was joining the band."

However, Bennington did say that if he was no longer in Linkin Park he would be tempted to join Velvet Revolver.

"If I wasn't in Linkin Park any more and I didn't know Scott, though, I'd say yes. Who wouldn't? The music is great and it would be a really cool opportunity,” he said.
